From the minute you fire up that new PC, chances are, its loaded with gobs of 'trial' software that will expire and leave your system inefficient and vulnerable. Some systems come preloaded with what many industry experts consider malicious software (including spyware and other programs designed to provide some company somewhere with a 'backdoor' into your system). Many PC manufacturers cut costs by agreeing to install junk software because they are paid, per system (or per 'seat'), by those software companies to do so.
Bottom line: sometimes you don't know what you are buying until it is on the market for a while and vetted by the masses. Unfortunately, this is true for most anything technology related these days. Many cell phones are locked out of their built-in capabilities by greedy phone networks who cripple certain functions only to sell it themselves as a premium service available only through them. DRM is a scheme to lock your purchased songs and videos to certain devices and times played and it often fails, to the consumer's avail. Some products, including PCs, come unprotected from hackers. Often, product marketing is vague and misleading. The list goes on. Just check out some of the shenanigans documented here.
Technology products should be like toasters. Push a button and they work. No advanced degree required. As an appliance, a product may sacrifice some 'advanced' capabilities, but dependability is the value.
Many modern technology products are often anything but simple appliances. A majority of PCs begin to fail shortly after they are plugged into the Internet because immediately require often hundreds of updates. And if you don't know how important the Internet is, by now, well...
In what feels like a cold, harsh world adopting new technology, sometimes all you need is an Igloofire. |
